SHPS Postgraduates & Researchers : Performing a scoping search to validate your proposed research question

A scoping search should be performed once you have decided on your research question to check its validity and finalise it before you begin your search in full.

A scoping search is necessary:

  • To gain an overview of the depth of primary research available on your question. This will clarify if you need to make your question broader or more precise.
  • If you are planning on performing a Systematic Review, to check that a review on the same question has not already been done or is in proposal.

This workshop will demonstrate how to perform a scoping search using a variety of recommended resources.
